Were Humans Genetically Engineered by Aliens?

Despite exhaustive research, archeologists have still not managed to come up with a plausible evolutionary link between early hominids and modern humans. So were the ancient Sumerians right when they said that humanity was the result of genetic engineering by aliens to produce a slave race?
