We often get emails from folks wanting advice on how to get back to the land. Since most people can’t afford to buy a farm outright or to leave their job without another source of income to replace it, how is it possible?

Perhaps you could start as a volunteer to gain experience for your CV plus decide if the farming life is really for you. You’ll also get valuable contacts who may be able to help you find a farmer who needs an intern/apprentice or live-in worker.

WWOOF is a world wide network. In return for volunteer help, WWOOF hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles.

Similar to WWOOF, GrowFood also connects farmers interested in teaching with people interested in farming. You can spend some time working in exchange for room, board, and experience and build a career for a lifetime. The mission of GrowFood is to help grow a community of 50 million new small-scale organic farmers.

Then there's Sustainable Farming Internships and Apprenticeships

It offers a directory of on-the-job learning opportunities in sustainable and organic agriculture in the U.S. (and some in Canada) as a tool to help farmers and apprentices connect with each other. The listed farms are primarily seeking interns/apprentices from North America. Apprenticeship programs on working farms are a great opportunity for people to try their hands at farming and gain production skills.

If formal education is more your thing, there's Generation Organic. "Gen-O" is the new generation of organic farmers taking the lead in producing high quality food for the future while caring for the environment. Organic Valley started Generation Organic to nurture a new generation of organic farmers.

Once you have all this experience, and really know that farming is for you, you could get yourself on a farm by offering help to a farmer.

The increasing age of farmers presents a great opportunity.

In most developed nations, most of the younger generation are opting to leave the farm and head for suburbia. As a result those left farming are getting older and older.

According to the last census, for example, in 2006 the median age of farmers in Australia was 52 and in the USA was over 58 years old. It is likely to have risen a couple of years since then. And in Australia 40% of farmers were over 55, with 18% over 65, well past the usual retirement age. More than a quarter of U.S. farmers are older than 65.

Many existing farmers must be desperate for help running their farms. Many farms also have vacant houses. So why not offer your services in exchange for a modest wage and a place to live and start a garden? You could either approach farmers directly, send out a resume, or advertise on local notice boards. If you are keen, it’s definitely worth a try.

Sad Day for Food Freedom

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2751 - the so-called Food Safety Modernization Act - on Dec 22 with a 216 to 144 vote (yes, many members of the House did not even vote).

Formerly called Food Safety Bill S510, this Bill is NOT About Food Safety. It is a draconian piece of legislation that literally places food under the control of the Department of Homeland Security, the organization created supposedly for foreign terrorists. Now, the DHS has the legal power to seize food production, force recalls, and shut down any farms it deems unsafe. This includes your backyard garden - should you want to sell anything you produce on your land, or even give away to a neighbor.

So it is now a revolutionary act to grow your own food, and we hope you all do!

Wherever you are located we urge families to develop their own square foot gardens and become as independent as possible from the attempt to control our food to restrict our freedoms. Sustainable Meat Production

We recently made a trip to an organic farm in the south-west of Western Australia to make a documentary film on how to slaughter pigs and chickens on the farm (we are presently producing the videos and they will soon be available to buy). It was an opportunity to learn from experienced farmers how to kill, de-hair and prepare a pig for butchering, as well as to try out the latest version of the “Mutha Plucka” chicken plucking machine we are developing.

We arrived at the farm in the afternoon and started heating up water for the pig kill as the sun went down. This is so we could complete the work at night and not have to worry about flies which can be a real problem here in Australia.

Early the next morning, before they were fed their breakfast, we headed off to the grower chicken pen to select a few victims for the table. The chickens looked small but when you picked one up it was surprisingly solid and heavy. Given that it usually takes me at least 16 weeks to grow enough meat on a regular rooster to make it worth butchering, it was astounding to learn that these chickens were only 5 weeks old. Wow! It turns out that they were commercial meat birds purchased as day olds from a specialist breeder. Now I believe that it makes no sense to try and grow meat birds unless you can tap into these super meat bird genes!

In case you were thinking of doing just that, the farmer did give us a few warnings about these super-broilers. Firstly, they eat an absolute heap – way more than other chicken breeds of similar age. Then again, I’m willing to bet they do it efficiently, and still use a lot less feed to get to table size than your usual backyard rooster.

Another issue with these chooks is general weakness. They are bred for packing on the flesh not for a long and healthy life. The farmer got rather attached to one very friendly bird which she didn’t have the heart to kill. However, despite considerable coddling and care, it still only lasted to 3 years of age. When they mature these “Steggles” type breeds are so heavy they can hardly get around and don’t handle hot conditions at all.

To overcome these issues, breeders of commercial meat chickens use different male and female lines to maximize productivity and vigor of the adult breeding flock.

Who the Hell is Serco?

Serco is probably the biggest company you have never heard of! Greening the Desert Using Permaculture

You couldn't imagine a more inhospitable place to try and establish productive plant growth. When Geoff Lawton first began the attempt, people laughed at him and said it couldn't be done. They laughed even harder when they saw all the "non-productive" hardy legumes he planted first. But Geoff had the last laugh when his Permaculture methods bore fruit, even to the extent of removing active salt from the soil.

Learning from Weeds on Permaculture Farms

Observation is an important part of Permaculture practice, and here are a few things it has taught me about weeds on our property this spring.

Have a close look at this photo. It shows a tree on a property adjacent to our own. The purple stuff is the weed “Paterson’s Curse” (PC). Do you notice that there is no PC under the tree? When you look closely you will see that this has nothing at all to do with sunlight – the ground is PC-free not just in the shady area under the tree, but within its entire dripline.

What is that telling us? What is different about the soil under the tree?

That tree is probably about 200 years old, so you’d have 200 years accumulation of feces from insects, reptiles and birds under it. So first clue about PC – it doesn’t grow where the fertility is high, favoring low fertility soils.

Here’s another photo showing either side of a fence on our property.

Both areas have been fertilized using organic materials according to Albrecht soil test results.

On the left is grazed land inside a paddock, on the right of the fence is the verge of our driveway that is not grazed but slashed each year.

After only 3 years of different treatment the contrast in amount of PC is astounding. What I am reading in this is that (over) grazing favors PC and slashing deters it.

Again we are probably talking about fertility – grazing removes some of the protective mulch from the soil surface, drying it out and retarding biological activity. Slashing has the opposite effect.

The top right of the photo shows a neighbor’s property thick with PC. It has been neither fertilized nor grazed (except by kangaroos). To me that suggests that prescriptive fertilization is the single biggest step you can take to favor the growth of useful pastures over weeds on your property.

Here’s another one that underlines this:

Both sides of this fence are grazed paddocks on our property. The only difference between them is in the amount of grazing pressure: the paddock on the left is properly fenced so has been grazed harder than the one on the right which has only temporary electric fencing that kept our ram in briefly …until the grass elsewhere started looking greener (we have since eaten the bugger which certainly taught him a lesson!). Neither side was ever slashed, so slashing is not absolutely necessary to deter PC.

What do all these things add up to? To me, they are saying that this weed (like many) appears where it is needed to restore fertility. If a combination of improvements are made to the health of the soil – such as adding strategic fertility amendments, and ensuring adequate pasture cover by not overgrazing – the weed disappears, making way for higher quality pasture plants. Conversely, damage the soil in any way, such as by overgrazing in our case, and the weed is there to repair the damage. In soils lacking in some essential nutrients, the weed that flourishes very often is able to harvest the lacking nutrients from very deep in the soil profile (and, some would argue, by less understood pathways), concentrating them in the tissues of the weed.

Australian farmer Peter Andrews made use of these valuable functions of weeds to bring the denuded landscape of his farm “back from the brink”. He explains how he did it in his book by the same name.

NIA Predicts Massive Hikes in Food Prices this Xmas

NIA, the US based National Inflation Association, projects that at the average U.S. grocery store it will soon cost $11.43 for an ear of corn, $23.05 for a 24 oz loaf of bread, $77.71 for 11.30 oz of roast coffee, $45.71 for a 64 fl oz container of orange juice, and $15.50 for a 1.55 oz chocolate candy bar.

The report highlights how despite the recent spectacular hike in food commodity prices - cotton rising by 54%, corn rising by 29%, soybeans rising by 22%, orange juice rising by 17%, and sugar rising by 51% during the months of September and October alone - these huge increases have yet to make their way into America's grocery stores because corporations have been reluctant to be the first to pass these price increases along to the consumer.

How to Build a Permaculture Swale

Geoff Lawton demonstrates the theory and construction of a swale in this video.

A swale is a water harvesting ditch that has a soft mound on the lower slope and follows a natural contour of the land very precisely.

Swales are built to slow down the flow of water and hold it for as long as possible on the property. They allow water to soak gently into the surrounding landscape and rehydrate the soil profile.

When you build a swale you should plant it immediately to take advantage of and fully utilize the moisture rather than allowing it to become a waterlogging hazard downslope. A diverse and “stacked” array of pioneer species (short to long-lived nitrogen-fixing herbage, shrubs and trees) are usually planted, interspersed with hardy or reticulated food producing plants grown on the raised lower bed of the swale. In this way a food forest system can be created, adding value, beauty and natural abundance to your property.

Swales are maintained by slashing weeds and the protein rich foliage of the pioneer species and dumping it into the swale trench to mulch and rot.

Gulf Stream Stalling?

According to reports, the gulf loop current has broken. The North Atlantic Gulf stream (sometimes known as the Conveyor) brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico with the effect of raising temperatures in Great Britain and western Europe much higher than they would otherwise be. If it stops, the warm water will also stop, and temperatures will plummet. What will this mean? Some are suggesting that the upcoming winter will simply continue into the following spring and summer without warming. Others believe it may take a few years for colder conditions to develop. Either way, the Earth has been through many Ice Ages in the past, thought to begin with the stalling of the Conveyor.

Where will all that warm water go instead? I'm hoping to Western Australia, bringing lots of rain with it! But things don't look great for the millions who currently call Europe home and time may be short.

Internet Filter Fails in Australia!

On August 6 this year the Australian government Coalition announced it won't be voting for an internet filter that censors the web. This comes after the Government responded to a strong community backlash against it, by deferring the filter until 2012.

The Coalition followed independent Senator Nick Xenophon, and the Greens in walking away from the proposed ineffective policy of internet censorship, leaving the Senate unable to pass the scheme.

1. Stockpiling helps. But you never no how long trouble will last, so locate
near renewable food sources.
2. Living near a well with a manual pump is like being in Eden.
3. After a while, even gold can lose its luster. But there is no luxury in war
quite like toilet paper. Its surplus value is greater than gold's so it makes a great barter item.
4. If you had to go without one utility, lose electricity - it's the easiest to
do without (unless you're in a very nice climate with no need for heat.)
5. Canned foods are awesome, especially if their contents are tasty without
heating. One of the best things to stockpile is canned gravy - it makes a lot of
the dry unappetizing things you find to eat in war somewhat edible. Only needs
enough heat to "warm", not to cook. It's cheap too, especially if you buy it in
bulk.
6. Bring some books - escapist ones like romance or mysteries become more
valuable as the war continues. Sure, it's great to have a lot of survival
guides, but you'll figure most of that out on your own anyway - trust me, you'll
have a lot of time on your hands.
7. The feeling that you're human can fade pretty fast. I can't tell you how many
people I knew who would have traded a much needed meal for just a little bit of
toothpaste, rouge, soap or cologne. Not much point in fighting if you have to
lose your humanity. These things are morale-builders like nothing else.
8. Slow burning candles and matches, matches, matches...

At the same time, huge cracks are opening up in our Earth's magnetic field, which normally protects us from solar radiation.

Have you been seduced by the Venus Project lately? It all sounds very grand at first glance. I really like the idea, for example, of designing efficient, sustainable "garden cities" of medium to high density central housing areas with green zones around them (that idea has been around for a long time and makes a lot of sense). No one could argue with such great planning.

And no-one would argue with the aims and goals of The Venus Project, which are set out below.

But the Venus Project has other, potentially ominous, objectives.

Let's take a critical look at some excerpts from their website promo:

• They propose a Resource-Based Economy defined as "a system in which all goods and services are available without the use of money, credits, barter or any other system of debt or servitude. All resources become the common heritage of all of the inhabitants, not just a select few. " In principle this sounds great. I am all for global equity (inequity and waste by the "haves" being a far bigger environmental and social issue than the population "bomb".) But this lovely sounding rhetoric is a promo for a new cashless society (complete with a microchipped, barcoded population?) - exactly what the New World Order is planning.

• Again from their website is a blatant call for One World Government that would manage the world's resources for the good of all: "In a resource-based economy all of the world's resources are held as the common heritage of all of Earth's people, thus eventually outgrowing the need for the artificial boundaries that separate people. This is the unifying imperative."

• They advocate doing away with working for "wealth, property and power", allowing people to work towards "fulfillment of their personal pursuits". Hmmm... sounds like communism to me. Ask the Chinese how free they feel today!

• "Technology intelligently and efficiently applied, conserves energy, reduces waste, and provides more leisure time. " More great marketing... who wouldn't want more leisure time?

• Microchipping is not mentioned on their website, but this sure sounds like it advocates it to me: "In order to effectively and economically utilize resources, the necessary cybernated and computerized technology could eventually be applied to ensure a higher standard of living for everyone..... They will eventually lead us to large-scale computer-based methods of social operation."

Anyhow, I for one will be going along to the lecture in my city coming up at the end of the month... you gotta keep an open mind, eh?

How to Be a Successful Refugee

Here are some of the recommendations you can learn about in this video:

• Get out of debt (particularly high priced debt like credit cards - not so important for mortgage debt).
• Have an evacuation plan organized ahead of time with your family and friends - call someone who lives in a different area and offer reciprocal support if either one of you needs to leave where you are. Don't rely on mobile phones.. they may stop working!
  
• Have a 48 hour pack (I would suggest 72 hour) of essentials to tide you over in the case of emergency, and have it ready for every member of the family to throw into the car at a moment's notice (including medicines). If some calamity precipitates a mass exodus, the best place to be is at the front of the traffic.
  
• Get to know the people in your local community! (We keep hearing that great advice over and over)
• Have a few months supply of food and water stored (or a water purifier on hand, preferably the mobile sort).
  
• Keep some cash on hand - as happened in during the Great Depression a Bank holiday (where you suddenly have no access to your accounts) could be announced at any moment as the economy goes down. Those with ready cash will be the ones best able to access the last supplies of food, medicine and other essential resources.
  
• Put a little extra (if you have it) into tangible gold and/or silver assets (rather than paper derivatives).
• Grow some food, even if its just a tomato plant in a container on your balcony. By giving it your best shot, you will learn important skills.
  
• Learn a practical skill while you can... your job could evaporate in the blink of an eye. Choose something useful that you could do for other people in a hard times economic situation - it could become the thing that tides you and your family over.

Climate Change Science Casts Doubt on Global Warming Theory

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) yesterday asked the Obama administration to investigate what he called “the greatest scientific scandal of our generation” — the actions of climate scientists revealed by the Climategate files, and the subsequent admissions by the editors of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report (AR4). He also called for former Vice President Al Gore to be called back to the Senate to testify. “In [Gore's] science fiction movie, every assertion has been rebutted,” Inhofe said. He believes Vice President Gore should defend himself and his movie before Congress.

Here's a scenario many of you will have seen before: Couple retires, buys a lovely new mobile home or caravan, and sets out on that long-awaited tour of the nation. What begins with excitement and enthusiasm turns sour a few weeks into the trip when one or both partners become ill.
