Sad Day for Food Freedom

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2751 - the so-called Food Safety Modernization Act - on Dec 22 with a 216 to 144 vote (yes, many members of the House did not even vote).

Formerly called Food Safety Bill S510, this Bill is NOT About Food Safety. It is a draconian piece of legislation that literally places food under the control of the Department of Homeland Security, the organization created supposedly for foreign terrorists. Now, the DHS has the legal power to seize food production, force recalls, and shut down any farms it deems unsafe. This includes your backyard garden - should you want to sell anything you produce on your land, or even give away to a neighbor.

So it is now a revolutionary act to grow your own food, and we hope you all do!

Wherever you are located we urge families to develop their own square foot gardens and become as independent as possible from the attempt to control our food to restrict our freedoms. For help on how to grow your own healthy food see the Natural Solutions Foundation’s Food Freedom Journal at http://www.healthfreedomusa.org/?p=2788.

Better buy yourself some heirloom seeds while you still have the chance.

In this video made prior to the passing of the bill, Glenn Beck explains the implications and urges people to express their opposition to it:

Here, Dr. Rima E. Laibow MD, Medical Director of Natural Solutions Foundation, urges First Lady Michelle Obama to intervene on behalf of the people:

  1. There is a problem with food regulations in the US and Glenn Beck is using scare tactics and his political bias to ignore the issue and rather make it seem worse than it really is.

Why is it a bad thing to have tighter regulations on food production? There are a LOT of bad chemicals (herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers) and even genetically altered foods that should not be entering our bodies, but they do without proper legislation.

From the little bit of research I've done on this bill, it seems to me that you are blowing this out of proportion and getting a bit carried away with what the bill actually represents. Here's a summary of the bill: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:HR02751:@@@D&summ2=m&

It says, "Exempts certain establishments that sell food directly to consumers, such as roadside stands, farmers markets or participants in a community supported agriculture program, from specified requirements of this Act." So this bill will not affect you if you are a small scale farmer trying to make a living off of your goods. If you are a medium-to-large scale farmer, then yes, I suppose there will be some new regulations. But in your posting here you make it sound as though the bill is supposed to restrict personal backyard gardens, when it isn't. Big farmers should be held responsible for the food they grow.

How can Dr. Laibow honestly declare that initiating tougher food laws will create obesity and cancer? She is referring to the big farm industry that already has no proper regulations to keep them in line. Yes, they definitely produce bad food (due to the chemicals). But she's making it sound as though small farms, the natural, farmer's market foods that are good and healthy for a person are going to disappear due to this bill. Again, read the bill. There are provisions for small scale operations. This is not the end of backyard farming, nor the end for small-scale farms.

Be sure to not use scare tactics when presenting information. There is already enough of that in the American media.
